POLITICAL ISSUES AND OFF-ROADING

BARBARA BOXER'S WILDERNESS
California Senator Barbara Boxer's California Wild Heritage Act of 2002 (S 2535) will close off another 2.5 million acres of our public lands to motorized and mechanized recreation. Included in the Act is Big Bear's own Sugarloaf Mountain and additional National Forest land around San Gorgonio. Please campaign against the re-election of all our anti-OHV foes. SOME GOOD NEWS
We may have some support for off-road motorcycle access coming from an unexpected source; San Bernardino County. The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution asserting the county's right of way over all roads covered under Federal Revised Statute 2477. Kern County recently followed suit. What this means is that the BLM and National Forest cannot keep us from using any access routes over which a county asserts its authority. An RS 2477 assertion supercedes any federal authority. Read the San Bernardino County's resolution and an explanation of RS 2477:

SOME BAD NEWS
It's not a trail access or two-stroke issue. New EPA emissions standards would basically eliminate most off-road motorcycles across the nation, including many of those that had previously qualified for a green-sticker and dual-sport registration in California under the CARB green-sticker requirements.

This new threat to our sport is no longer a land use issue. It has become a vehicle use issue! A direct assault against our off-road motorcycles is being waged by the eco-nazis who are pushing for stricter noise and emission regulations that would effectively eliminate most dirt capable motorcycles from public lands. When off-road motorcycles are outlawed, only outlaws will be riding dirt bikes! For more on the subject, visit these links:

FOREST SERVICE BLOCKING MOTORIZED ACCESS

Check out this series of maps that shows actions proposed by the U.S. Forest Service's which could close motorized travel routes throughout much of Southern California's four National Forests. Pay special attention to the Closure Maps for the San Bernardino National Forest, as well as those for the other National Forests in which you ride.

Get personally involved in the Forest Plan Update process by calling (909) 383-5588, and help to keep your favorite trails open by riding them. We have posted Trail Maps showing the locations of some very good motorcycle trails that are slated for closure by the Forest Service. Please ride these trails to keep them open!

FOREST LIBERATION ORGANIZATION

The Forest Liberation Organization (FLO) encourages individuals to protest the Forest Service's denial of their rights to use and enjoy their public lands. Many of the Forest Service's road and trail closures have not followed proper procedures and/or have violated RS 2477, and are therefore unjust or illegal. Find out more by visiting the FLO web site.
